Money

There is no clear substitute for happiness, health, and fairness. Money, by contrast, can purportedly be exchanged for anything. The prospect of its endless possibilities is seductive, but the human factor in dealings with countable financial gain is nothing short of astonishing.

Sascha Behnk, Per Schmid, and Alexander F. Wagner from the Department of Banking and Finance demonstrate that economic behavior is not always rationally motivated. Stefan Leins, in his ethnological field study, reveals how forecasts by financial analysts rely not only on facts but, above all, on good stories.

In the work of artists Rosalie Schweiker and Jo Waterhouse, inventing plausible future scenarios by laying tarot cards is depicted as a genuine – and genuinely amusing – service. The concepts of money and power also play a key role in this complex jumble. The work of artist Till Velten, for instance, explores the transformations these concepts have undergone and examines the procurement of insignia that justify power through money.
