How the Brain Decides

How the Brain Decides

Christopher Hill / Christian Ruff / Zoltan Nagy

When people are in competition with each other, they have to assess the actions of their opponent in order to make the best possible move themselves. These are key themes at the Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research, where researchers examine how the brain reacts in social situations. To do this, they combine cutting-edge imaging methods such as MRI with transcranial magnetic stimulation in which a magnetic field is created that suppresses neuronal signals. Given the exceptional complexity of the human brain, the results of these experiments can offer no more than a rough indication of the processes actually occurring. Nevertheless, this research is an important step toward gaining a better understanding of human nature and the way in which the brain influences behavior – especially when making economic decisions. The findings may also contribute to better diagnosis of disease-related changes in these processes.
