Cash and the Canon – During, After and Beyond Artistic Production
Swiss Institute for Art Research SIK-ISEA (Manifesta 11 Parallel Event)
What is the interplay of money and value in the art system? Over three evenings, artists, curators, gallerists, archivists, and art scholars will discuss the relationship between production and the creation of value. Contemporary art history is characterized by the paradox that art should be discussed, valued, and conserved from the moment of its creation, or at the very least when it is first presented. The key question is: when does a work begin to accrue value by way of documentation, archiving, valuation, and intermediation? Is it during production, directly afterwards, or in twenty or one hundred years?
