The Sound Of Science

The Sound Of Science

Fritz Hauser

With roughly 8,000 employees and some 26,000 students, the University of Zurich produces an array of noises and sounds that is fascinating in its diversity – a circumstance that formed the basis for The Sound of Science, a sound installation specially created for Transactions. Using live recordings made on site, the acoustic landscape of the various laboratories, offices, and meeting places is examined, dissected, and reassembled. Selected sequences are structured, given rhythm, and dynamically compressed. Eschewing additional electronic effects, a multifaceted aural universe is created that visitors can experience in three dimensions upon entering the sound installation. Fritz Hauser is a sound artist, composer, drummer, and percussionist who has established an international reputation with numerous radio plays, CDs, and performances in addition to works that span different media, for instance music in dialogue with theater, dance, architecture, and light.
